LAPLACE – There was no place like home for the Larayo Barracudas this weekend at the Island Invitational 2000 River Parishes Swim Meet at Larayo.

The Barracudas swam away with their fourth straight Swim Invitational title, finishing with 489.5 points. Riverlands, the regular season leaguechampions, was second with 378.5 points. Belle Terre was third with 362points, followed by Hill Heights with 230, Sun Villa with 137, LaVacherie with 120 and Sunny Acres with 24.

Erica Schmidt of Hill Heights broke her own record in the girls’ 11-12 50- yard backstroke with a time of 31.38 seconds. Schmidt had set the recordin the preliminaries Saturday with a time of 31.60, beating the old recordof 31.81 set by Hill Heights’ Lacie Corso in 1997.Other records set in the preliminaries were by Hill Heights’ Kevin Braud in the boys’ 13-14 50-yard backstroke and by Larayo’s Courtney Gist in the girls’ 13-14 50-yard breaststroke. Braud swam a 27.97 Saturday, breakingthe record of 28.40 set by Riverlands’ Robbie Paydo in 1997. Braud went onto win the event Sunday. Gist had a record time of 34.07, topping the oldmark of 34.96 set by Belle Terre’s Kellie Logan in 1993.Senior swimmers competing in their last Invitational were Belle Terre’s Adam Gros, Maciek Dabrowski and Megan Roussel; Sunny Acres’ Henry Schexnayder and Lance Landry; Larayo’s Abby Howard and Liz Dufresne; Riverlands’ Chris Owens and Jeff Carcich; and Hill Heights’ Amy Matherne.

Those swimmers swam a final lap at the conclusion of the meet.

Larayo took a 165-149.5 lead over Riverlands after the backstroke andincreased it to 239.5-202.5 after the breaststroke. The Barracudas wouldtake a 293.5-252.5 advantage over the Stingrays heading into the medleyrelays. Four victories in the medley relays increased the lead to 387.5-312 over Belle Terre heading into the freestyle relays.

Larayo was led by Garrett Gist, Katelyn Vitrano, Mallory Brooks and Courtney Gist, each of whom was the high point scorer in their respective age group. Garrett Gist placed first in three events in the 6 and under agegroup, the freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. Courtney Gist was alsofirst in three events in the 13-14 age group, the breaststroke, individual medley and butterfly.

Vitrano, swimming in the 7-8 age group, was first in the freestyle and backstroke and second in the butterfly. Brooks was first in the freestyleand individual medley and second in the backstroke in the 11-12 age group.

High point total winners for Riverlands were Neil Schexnayder, Ross Brignac, Chris Dixon, Bethany Cottingham and Kristen Abbondante.

Schexnayder, swimming in the 7-8 age division, placed first in the freestyle and backstroke and second in the butterfly. Brignac was first inthe individual medley, the backstroke and the breaststroke in the 11-12 age group.

Cottingham was first in the freestyle and second in the breaststroke and butterfly in the 15-18 age group. Abbondante, also swimming in the 15-18s, was first in the backstroke and breaststroke. Dixon was first in theindividual medley, the freestyle and the butterfly in the 15-18 age group.

Other high point winners were Hill Heights’ Jared Rodrigue, Brad Corso and Erica Schmidt; Belle Terre’s Alexis Bailey and Coti Roussel; and LaVacherie’s Lindsey Rodrigue. Jared Rodrigue was first in the backstrokeand butterfly in the 9-10 age group. Corso was first in three events in the13-14 age group, the individual medley, the freestyle and the breaststroke. Schmidt was first in the backstroke and butterfly andsecond in the individual medley, Bailey was also first in three events in the 9-10 group, the freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. Roussel was first in the breaststroke, second inthe freestyle and third in the backstroke in the 6 and under division.

Lindsey Rodrigue was first in the freestyle, second in the backstroke and third in the breaststroke in the 6 and under division.

High point winners in the “B” division were Larayo’s Austin Matherne and Riverlands’ Courtney Fredrick in the 6 and under group; Sun Villa’s Ethan Bleakley and Belle Terre’s Megan Maynes in 7-8s; Riverlands’ Steven Graver and Hill Heights’ Meghan O’Quinn in 9-10s; Larayo’s Travis Torres and Belle Terre’s Matthew Stell and Brittany Donnelly in 11-12s; Larayo’s Jeremy Catoire and Hill Heights’ Kristen Shepard in 13-14s; and Hill Heights’ Alex Nassar and Amy Matherne in 15-18s.
