Catfish Festival is next week

DES ALLEMANDS – The 26th annual Louisiana Catfish Festival is scheduled July 7-9 on the grounds of St. Gertrude Catholic Church, Louisiana Highway631.

Musical guests scheduled to entertain catfish fans from near and far include Deuce of Hearts on Friday, Don Rich on Saturday and Treater on Sunday. Many local artists and musicians will also perform throughout theweekend.

Other events of interest include the catfish cooking contest, canning and preserving contest and the St. Charles Parish championship 5-K run,preceded by a one-mile walk/run.

This year’s festival will also feature its first craft show, to be held Saturday and Sunday.

As always, the major draw will be the food, including the most tasty catfish in the universe, reflecting Des Allemands’ official status as “Catfish Capital of the Universe.”Catfish sauce piquant, platters, po-boys and boulettes, soft shell crab po- boys, shrimp po-boys, seafood gumbo, jambalaya, funnel cakes and onion mums will be joined by more standard fare of hamburgers, hot dogs and fries.

A sweet shop, country store, rides, games and souvenirs will round out the Louisiana Catfish Festival’s attractions.

Festival hours are Friday, 5-10 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; andSunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.The festival is sponsored by St. Gertrude Catholic Church and is free tothe public.
