Riverside’s quick start sinks SCC

RESERVE – Riverside jumped out to a 20-2 first half lead on its way to a 33-16 victory over St. Charles Catholic Thursday night in River ParishesSummer League action.

Riverside improved to 1-0-1 in league action while St. Charles Catholicdropped to 0-2.

Riverside’s Wendy Reames led all scorers with 13 points. Crystal Romecontributed nine points while Amy Hymel chipped in with eight points.

Amanda Helm led St. Charles Catholic with eight points.Three pointers from the left corner and the top of the key by Reames and one by Rome from the left side gave the Lady Rebels a 12-0 lead. Rome andHeather Montz then took steals in to make it a 16-point game. Romefollowed a Lady Comet timeout with a jumper from the top of the key.

Helm got St. Charles Catholic on the scoreboard late in the half with twofree throws. A drive by Reames made it 20-2 at the half.Hymel scored twice inside at the start of the second half to build the lead to 24-2. Katie Monica scored off a pass from Helm and Kristin Lodriguesput back a miss to make it 26-6. Following a jumper by Reames, AbbyForsythe scored off a pass from Lynze Perkins.

Reames hit a 3-pointer, her third of the game, to make it 31-8. St. CharlesCatholic came back with a basket inside by Helm and a jumper by Jenny Oncale. After Hymel scored on a put back, Helm hit two free throws, thentook a steal in. Perkins scored inside to close out the scoring.”We are very young,” St. Charles Catholic coach Jeff Montz, whose teamlost six seniors and have no seniors on the upcoming team, said. “We needto learn to play together and acquaint the new players with the system.

This gives us a jump start on the season.

Riverside coach Matt White split up his team, allowing him to give more of his players more playing time.

“We use it as a chance to get experience,” White said. “We practiced a fewtimes and now we just play the games and let them have fun. It’s goodcompetition. I felt we needed more games and it offers the players goodexperience.”
