Romeville students learn about careers, get awards

ROMEVILLE -Organized by Carlisa Netterville, a teacher at Romeville Elementary School, 34 members of local business, industry, community school and emergency services gave presentations at the annual Career Day May 9.
The program for the school’s seventh- and eighth-graders is designed to give students a look at what jobs are out there.
“The presenters received some very good questions and commented that the students were very well behaved,” said Netterville. All of the presentersexpressed their desire to return next year.
One student was overhead commenting that at first he was only interested in football, but now he’d like to be like the Marine guy.
“The program gets the kids thinking about options other than just athletics,” one teacher commented.
Linda Johnson, a member of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, gave the keynote speech. Demonstrating what one could learn,Johnson sang a song and asked who all knew the words. When many raisedtheir hands she proved her point that they are capable of learning a lot, if the effort is put forth.
On May 3 Romeville hosted it’s annual awards banquet. Students whoachieved academic distinction with a 3.0 or above grade point average,excelled in extra curricular activities or eighth-graders who are moving on to high school were awarded.
With 280 parents and local citizens in attendance, 85 awards were given out, said coordinator for the banquet Vondra Etienne. The students received amedal with the symbol of the Lamp of Knowledge attached to blue and gold ribbon, the school colors. Also, students received a cup engraved with thename of the school and filled with candy and a pencil.
Jawanza Hathorn, a student of St. James High School, sang for the group.Kathe Hambrick, founder and director of the River Roads African-American History Museum, gave the keynote speech on striving for excellence.
