DEAR EDITOR: I am disgusted how some of our residents in St. John Parish feel aboutanimal control. It is very clear to me that changes are needed. There isn’tenough time to pick up all the strays, nor space to keep them in, let alone ride and look for certain animals.

If the parish had a proper facility to house stray animals and the manpower to do better, they would. However, if enforcing the parish leashlaw and enforcing the ordinance is a problem, why do we have a government? People are blaming the Humane Society for stray animals when in fact it is the fault of irresponsible pet owners as well as past officials who didn’t understand this growing problem. An animal-control officer’s salaryhas been in the parish budget for the last two years. When all was in orderto fill the position, the previous council chose to place it under the direction of the sheriff.

Those of you with animal-related concerns need to focus your energy on the council to fill the position of an animal control officer and find the money for a larger and better facility to house these animals.
