If your mama was anything like my mama, I’m sure you’ve heard the words: “You won’t know if you like it unless you try it.”Well, there are some things in life that doesn’t apply to, like falling out of a skyscraper or getting bitten by a snake, but, by and large, it’s true.
Mothers usually invoke that saying at the dinner table trying to coax a stubborn child into eating a plateful of candied yams or poached eggs. Or a woman uses itwhen trying to persuade her husband to watch a romantic comedy instead of an action film.
Most of us are touched each year by what I call the Girl Scout cookie phenomenon.
When I was a little Girl Scout of 8 or 9 it was safe for us to go from door to door and hawk our wares, which at that time probably consisted of one variety and everyone knew what they were getting.
Nowadays there are seven different cookies to choose from. The perennialfavorite, of course, seems to be the thin mint. And there are those customerswho home in on the thin mint column for their order and never venture away. I’ll callthem the conservatives.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, of course, are the liberals – those cookie lovers who buy a little of everything.
Smack in the middle (where most of us are) are the moderates. We have ourfavorite cookie (mine is the do-si-do), but we’re occasionally willing to branch out and try something new.
The thin mint conservatives are probably those children who would go to bed early rather than eat a bite of spinach. Cookie lover liberals are those kids who neverwent to bed without a few Bandaids. And the moderates learned somehow to picktheir pleasures but be willing to occasionally gamble on something new and different.
This year, as you enjoy your Girl Scout cookies, remember that life too is meant to be enjoyed. The trick is to have a few adventures without overindulging. Bonappetit!
