Parkview Baptist’s speed, passing too much for SCC

LAPLACE – Speed kills and Tuesday night it put an end to St. CharlesCatholic’s playoff run.
Parkview Baptist used its speed and a crisp passing game to streak past the Comets, 8-1, in the Division III regional playoffs Tuesday at Thomas Dupuy Stadium.
Parkview Baptist (19-4) advances to play Newman in the quarterfinals.
Newman defeated the Eagles last season in the Division III championship game. St. Charles Catholic finished its season at 14-5-1.Parkview got on the scoreboard seven minutes as Ryan McCearley stole a throw in in the Comet zone and was taken down in front of the goal.
McCearley then converted the penalty kick, knocking it to the left of Comet goalie Kurt Biven for a 1-0 lead.
St. Charles Catholic looked to tie the game five minutes later. Justin Chauvintook a corner kick from Stefan Villafana but had his shot sail high.
McCearley assisted on the Eagles’ second goal, taking the ball in and passing ahead to Major Person. Person moved in and angled a shot to the left cornerof the net, making it 2-0 at the 15-minute mark. Two minutes later, Personstole a pass in the left corner of the box and angled a shot to the left side of the goal for a 3-0 lead.
It would be 4-0 at the 19-minute mark as Person took the ball down the left side and passed ahead to McCearley. McCearley then flipped a pass to NickBrune whose shot hit off the left goalpost and deflected into the right side of the net.
Chauvin tried to answer for the Comets but had his shot grabbed by Eagle goalie Brad Villa. Villa then grabbed a header by Phillip Hoffman off a pass byJon Boucvalt at the 23-minute mark.
McCearley increased Parkview’s lead to 5-0 at the 27-minute mark, getting past a defender and knocking in a shot from straight on from 10 yards out.
Person tried to make it 6-0 five minutes later but had his shot in front of the net blocked by Biven. Person took the rebound but hit the goalpost withhis shot. Neil Brunson’s attempt off the rebound sailed wide right.St. Charles Catholic had an opportunity to get on the board before the halfbut Chauvin’s shot off a pass from Boucvalt sailed wide. Andrew Revall thentook a pass from Elinus Noel but had his shot grabbed by Villa in the last minute.
Boucvalt took a long pass early in the second half and moved in one-on-one with Villa who came out of net to deflect the shot away. Boucvalt’s reboundattempt was then blocked by the Eagle defense. Hoffman followed by stealinga pass but had his shot grabbed by Villa.
The Comets got the board at the 19-minute mark as Bret Deroche took a pass, got past Villa and tapped in a shot, cutting the deficit to 5-1.
But Parkview had an answer in the final five minutes as Brian Wesley was taken down in front of the goal and Jonathan Ford converted the penalty kick.
Chris Fournet then sent a pass through the crease that was headed into the right side of the net by Wes Brown. Jason LeBlanc closed out the scoring byknocking in a corner kick by Ford.
St. Charles Catholic had one last chance but goalie Bret Bergeron dove to hisright to knock away a penalty kick by Boucvalt in the final minute.
“The first penalty kick definitely took us out,” St. Charles Catholic assistantcoach Carlos Doubleday said. Head coach Mickey Simon missed the gameafter his wife had a baby boy Monday night. “But these guys played good andit was a good season for them.”
