LAPLACE – The Destrehan Lady Cats softball team kept up its impressive play in the preseason, defeating Ponchatoula, 7-1, in the St. Charles CatholicJamboree Saturday morning.
The Lady Cats had gotten steady pitching and hitting in their two scrimmages last week and the defense had committed just one error in those two games. Destrehan kept it up against Ponchatoula as starter KimBierman pitched out of jams in each of the first two innings.
The Destrehan bats came alive in the third inning as the Lady Cats sent 11 batters to the plate. Anna Glore started it off by reaching on an infieldsingle. Danielle White and Emily Eoff followed with fielder’s choices to loadthe bases.
Nicole Peltier scored Glore with a fly ball to center. Bierman followed with asingle to left to knock in White. Eoff came in and Bierman went to third on athrowing error by catcher Amy Welch.
After Jennifer Eskine reached on a dropped pop up by shortstop Alecia Meyers and Katherine Kain, Jamie Tarullo brought in two with a double down the third baseline.
Kain scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0 with Tarullo advancing to third.
Melissa Anderson knocked in Tarullo with the final run of the inning with a ground out to shortstop.
Ponchatoula got a run in the bottom of the inning as Welch walked, went to second on a sacrifice by Brielle Turpin, stole third and scored on a ground out to second by Brendan Perrin.
Bierman, who has been throwing well despite a jammed finger, pitched all three innings, holding Ponchatoula hitless while walking three and striking out two.
“Kim has been placing the ball well and throwing it hard,” Destrehan coach Jemi LaHaye-Carlone said. “The defense has stayed behind her and that’sbeen the key.”Overall, LaHaye-Carlone has been impressed with her team so far. Theseniors on the squad were the freshmen when she took over the program.
“This is the best team I’ve had since I’ve been at Destrehan,” LaHaye- Carlone said. “They’ve been playing with a lot of intensity. We expect to windistrict, that’s our goal. I’m real happy with the way we have played. We’refinally getting all together offensively and defensively. If we keep doing it ondefense and our bats keep up, that will be our two keys.”
