Newman pulls away from Riverside

RESERVE – With second place in District 9-2A on the line, Lauren Mioton hit consecutive 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help Newman pull away to a 48-39 victory over Riverside Wednesday night in the Rebels Gym.
Newman moved to within a game of first place Ridgewood (23-5, 6-0) in district, improving to 5-1 and 17-10 overall. Riverside dropped to thirdwith a 4-2 district and 11-11 overall record.
Newman took a 33-28 lead into the fourth quarter but Riverside pulled to within two on its second possession on a Jennifer Guidry 3-pointer from the right corner. The Lady Rebels could not pull even, however, on theirnext two possessions and Mioton answered with a 3-pointer from the right wing. After a traveling call against the Lady Rebels, Mioton again buried a3-pointer from the right wing to make it 39-31 with 5:27 left.
Riverside pulled to within six as Guidry scored off a steal by Crystal Rome. But Jessica Neveu came right back with a jumper from the leftbaseline and a 3-pointer from the left wing on the Greenies’ next two possessions to make it 44-33 at the 2:47 mark.
A drive by Guidry and a jumper by Heather Montz brought the Lady Rebels to within seven with 1:50 left. But Neveu found Emily Buth deep and thenpassed to Tiffany Jones underneath on an inbounds pass to bring the lead back to 11 with 40 seconds left.
Neveu finished with 16 points. Mioton led the Greenies with 18 pointswhile Katherine Katz and Buth each chipped in with six points.
Riverside was led by Guidry with 20 points. Montz contributed 11 pointsand Amy Hymel seven.
“We had been playing well up to tonight,” Riverside coach Matt White said.
“I don’t know if we were nervous because it was a big game but we didn’t respond well. Mentally, I didn’t feel we were prepared. Everything didn’t goour way but we didn’t make things go our way. That’s the bottom line.We’ll bounce back though. I’m looking forward to practice tomorrow.”Newman led 24-17 at the half and went ahead by nine on a jumper by Katz early in the third quarter. Riverside then scored eight unanswered pointsto pull to within one. Montz scored on two put backs and Guidry added oneafter a Rome steal to make it a three-point game. Rome then grabbedanother steal at midcourt and fed Guidry driving from the left, cutting the deficit to 26-25 with 4:20 left in the third quarter.
After a Newman timeout and a free throw by Mioton, Hymel tied the game at 27 by taking a pass from Guidry inside. Newman came right back with alayup and a jumper by Neveu and a jumper from the left wing by Mioton to take a 33-28 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Newman jumped out to a 12-4 lead with 1:30 left in the first quarter behind jumpers by Buth and a 3-pointer by Mioton. After a pass from Rometo Montz inside, Katz hit a jumper from the free throw line to make it 14- 6 at the end of the first quarter.
Riverside pulled to within three on its first possession of the second quarter on a put back by Guidry but Newman came back with jumpers by Katz and Mioton to make it 18-9 with 6:22 left. The Lady Rebels came backwith an 8-2 run, pulling to within 20-17 on two put backs by Hymel and free throws by Rome and Guidry. But Neveu answered by taking steals byMioton and Jones in to make it a seven-point halftime margin.
