Martin Luther King Jr. to be honored Monday

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday will be observed throughoutthe River Parishes Monday.

In St. James Parish, the annual King Day program is set again in theauditorium of St. James High School, starting at noon.Featured speaker will be the Rev. Jennifer Jones, and the program willalso include musical selections from area church choirs.

In St. John the Baptist Parish, 40th Judicial District Judge MadelineJasmine is serving double-duty as grand marshal of the march and featured speaker.

The 9 a.m. march will follow the traditional route from Our Lady of GraceCatholic Church on River Road, Reserve, to the Reserve Oaks Housing Development on East 13th Street.

There, starting at 10 a.m., the program will include choir performances,solo artists and special readings on the life and works of Dr. King.The program is organized by the Rev. Forell Bering.In St. Charles Parish, the annual march begins at 10 a.m. from the WestBridge Park in Luling to the lawn of the parish courthouse in Hahnville, led by grand marshal and school board member Alfred Green.

At the courthouse, attorney Mark Jones of Hahnville will be the featured speaker in a noon program filled with music, presentation of awards for the “Share the Dream” essay contest and prayer.

A performance by the Bell Baptist Church drill team is planned, and Councilman Desmond Hilaire will present “I Had a Dream.”
