Parents, new students enjoy DHS open houseLEONARD GRAY

DESTREHAN – At least 250 visitors arrived at Destrehan High School and got the red carpet treatment, the future students and their parents getting the full scope of the school’s classes, programs and activities.
“I get kind of surprised when I see everything we do,” Principal Chipper Simon commented.
Along with presentations by teachers and current student leaders, tour groups were escorted around the campus, viewing the business, technology, TV production, family and consumer science, fine and industrial arts, foreign languages, science, mathematics, physical education, English and social studies areas of the school.
In addition, the visitors were treated to performances by the DHS cheerleaders and Desty Darlings dance team, the DHS Wildcat Band and the DHS Chorus.
Besides the classroom areas, clubs and organizations ranging from National Honor Society to Students Against Destructive Decisions were on hand to introduce their programs. Visitors also toured the library,gymnasium and JROTC facilities.
Information and brochures were provided on Destrehan High’s mission, enrollment (averaging 1,500 students per year) and quality of educational product. According to 1998-99 ACT scores, Destrehan High marked itshighest average score of 19.8.The evening was co-sponsored by Shell Norco Refining/Motiva and Shell Chemical Company, Destrehan High’s partners in education.
Also, parents were also introduced to many support organizations in which they can play supportive roles in their children’s education, including band boosters, DHS Kickoff Club, mentoring, PTSA and the Junior Great Books Program.
Door prizes were also made available by Saia’s Oaks Plantation Restaurant, DHS Country Crafters, SADD, Ladycats soccer team, DHS drama department, Wildcat Kitchen, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the DHS marching band.
