ST. JAMES – It was the battle of the north and the south…Louisiana, thatis, and this time the south won as the St. James Wildcats rolled over theBastrop Rams, 35-0.

After a slow first quarter, the Wildcats finally got into gear and dominated the game. St. James had a total offense of 410 yards ascompared to Bastrop’s 114 total yards. The Wildcats had 164 yardsrushing and 246 yards passing. Bastrop ended up with 77 yards rushingand 37 yards passing. The Rams were also crippled by four interceptionsand too many penalties.

The biggest rusher for the Wildcats was Travell Steib who ran one time for 81 yards and a touchdown.

Bastrop got the ball first but quickly punted it away. However, even withsome good passing by quarterback Corey Webster, the Wildcats had to punt it away after two series. Bastrop didn’t have any luck either and againthey had to punt.

Then St. James fumbled the ball on their 39-yard line, and defensive backTravis Jones recovered for Bastrop. However, two penalties and threeincomplete passes forced the Rams to punt and that was the end of the first quarter with no score on either side.

The second quarter started as uneventful as the first with the Wildcats going through three plays and punting. Bastrop started to show some lifeby marching the ball down the field from their 40-yard line down to the Wildcat’s 25-yard line.

The St. James defense tightened up and managed to block three passes ofDenNorris Cambell. But good luck turned to bad when St. James fumbled ontheir own 20-yard line and Bastrop’s Eddie Washington recovered.

Bastrop slowly moved the ball from the St. James’ 26-yard line to the 13,but then Cambell was sacked by Wildcat Atari Raymond on fourth down and the Rams had to give up the ball.

The Wildcats moved the ball well by passing and had two first downs. Onsecond-and-10, Webster threw to tight end Alvin Bartholomew who ran it in for a touchdown. Alvin Bartholomew missed the extra point and thescore was 6-0.

Larry Davenport of Bastrop fumbled the kickoff and St. James recovered. However an unsportsmanlike penalty against the Wildcats gave Bastrop the ball back on their own 49-yard line. Bastrop couldn’t do anything and itpunted back to St. James.Taking over on their own 19-yard line, the Wildcats missed a pass and then on second down, Webster handed off to Travell Steib who ran it back 81 yards for the second touchdown of the night. Instead of going for theextra point, St. James decided to try for a two-point conversion andWebster connected with Justin Aubert in the corner of the end zone for two points and a 14-0 lead at the end of the second quarter.

The third quarter started with St. James on their own 35-yard line. Afterone good run by Webster and two missed passes, the Wildcats punted and the Rams took over on their 36-yard line. Then on third down, Cambellwas intercepted by defensive back Jereal Dillon on the Ram’s 32-yard line.

The very next play Webster tossed it to Davin Dennis who ran 24 yards for the third touchdown. This time, Bartholomew connected for the extrapoint, and the score was 21-0.

On the second down after the kickoff, Dillon got his second interception of the night and ran it back 35 yards for the fourth touchdown of the evening for the Wildcats. The point after was good and now the score was 28-0.Webster made two passes of 13 and 23 yards plus two good runs by Steib and St. James was knocking on Bastrop’s door on the 3-yard line. Byron Keller then ran it into the end zone for the final score of the evening. After another successful point after, the score was 35-0, andthe end of the third quarter.

St. James plays Assum-ption next week.
