Samuels leads East Jefferson’s 15-10, 15-4 sweep of Lady Cats

DESTREHAN – Theresa Samuels was a force around the net for East Jefferson Thursday against Destrehan, delivering eight kills and providing top defense as the Lady Warriors swept past the Lady Cats, 15-10, 15-4 in non-district play.
East Jefferson remained undefeated through four games while Destrehan dropped its first game of the season after three victories.
Brandi Lopez had two of the Lady Warriors seven aces. Kimberly Biermanled the Lady Cats with five kills while Quinina Sinceno provided top defense. Bierman, Terri August and Jessica Johnson each had aces.East Jefferson jumped out to a 4-0 lead on its second serve of the first game. Teryn Taranto served two aces and Samuels delivered a kill duringthe run.
After a kill by Danielle Tuckson into the back right corner made it 5-0, Destrehan rallied to knot the score.
Bierman knocked a kill into the back right corner and followed with one down the middle off a East Jefferson defender. A Lady Warrior error and anace by Bierman brought the Lady Cats to within 5-4. After service breaksby each side, an East Jefferson error with Jan Chauvin serving tied the score at 5.
East Jefferson began to pull away again on its next serve as consecutive aces by Lopez to the back line made it 8-5. Tuckson delivered another aceon the Lady Warriors’ next serve to make it a four-point game. Followingan ace by August, Samuels sandwiched a kill off the top of the net and a block around an ace by Patrice Dillon to give East Jefferson a 12-6 lead.
Destrehan rallied again to pull to within two. After a lift by EastJefferson, Sinceno had a block and Bierman followed with a downball that was dug out. A serve later, a kill by August made it 12-10.Following an East Jefferson time out and a service break, the Lady Warriors put the game away with Lopez serving. After a Lady Cat error,Tuckson had consecutive blocks to end the first game.
Destrehan took an early 2-1 lead in the second game behind an ace into the right corner by Johnson and a dink by Bierman.
East Jefferson came back three breaks later as a block by Samuels, an ace by Tuckson and two Lady Cat errors made it 5-2.
After a lift call pulled the Lady Cats to within 5-3, East Jefferson scored nine straight points on its next serve. Samuels had two kills and a blockduring the run while the Lady Cats were called for two net violations and a lift.
Destrehan got a point on an East Jefferson error with August serving but Samuels delivered a kill off a free ball at the net to regain the serve and the Lady Warriors got the match winner on a net violation.
Destrehan hosts South Terrebonne Tuesday afternoon.
