Lori Roussel crowned St. John Sugar Queen

RESERVE – Lori Roussel of Reserve is the newly crowned St. John theBaptist Parish Sugar Queen.

Miss Roussel, a third-year student at Louisiana State University, was one of 12 contestants vying for the title over the weekend.

And while 1998 queen Kara Keller got a night’s reprieve on giving up her crown due to a power failure at the St. John Theatre, she passed the titleto Roussel just after noon Sunday.

The pageant was delayed overnight after storms rolled through the area Saturday evening and power was knocked out at the theatre for several hours.

Things were back on track Sunday morning, and the pageant went on as planned.

Roussel is a 1997 graduate of Riverside Academy, where she was class valedictorian, Homecoming Queen and Miss Senior. She was alsoRiverside’s Athlete of the Year in 1997. She maintains a 4.0 grade pointaverage at LSU.

Voted first runner-up in the 51st annual Sugar Queen pageant was Shannon Hinton, a 1999 graduate of St. Charles Catholic High School. She also wonthe photogenic award.

Second runner-up was Shana Luminais, a 1999 graduate of Riverside Academy. Stephanie Shaffer, a third-year student at SoutheasternLouisiana University was third runner-up, and Ashley Jolly, a 1999 graduate of Riverside Academy, was fourth runner-up.

Brandi Catoire, a student at St. Charles Catholic High, won the fashionaward, while Brigitte Gommel, a 1999 graduate of Riverside Academy, was selected Miss Congeniality by pageant contestants.

Other contestants in this year’s pageant were Tara Williams, Leslie Bailey, Rebecca Vicknair and Jill Jacob.
