LUTCHER – Two members of the Lutcher boys’ track and field teams recently traveled to Omaha, Neb. To compete in the 1999 Junior Olympics.David Pittman and Ricardo Williams, who helped Lutcher place fifth in the Class 3A state track and field meet in May, competed in the Junior Olympics in the relays.
The two helped their team, which also included runners from Istrouma and Baton Rouge, place 10th in the 4×100 and 4×400 and 12th in the 4×800 relays.
“It was alright,” Pittman, who competed in the 400 meters and 4×400 relay at the state meet, said of competing in Omaha. “We had a lot of goodcompetition. I was very excited. It was my first time doing it.”The team qualified for the Junior Olympics by placing first in all three events at the district and regional qualifying meets. The district meetwas held at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans.
Pittman, who also competes in the triple jump with Lutcher, said the experience will help him for the prep season next year.
“It was a good experience,” Pittman said.
Lutcher track coach Chris Barrient said that he was happy that the two got the opportunity to compete in the Junior Olympics, saying that Pittman and Williams, who competed in the state meet in the 400-meter relay, are always working out on their own as well as with the team.
“Nobody works harder than those two,” Barrient said.
Barrient agreed that the two competing at that level will help the squad next year.
“Running against that kind of talent will be a big plus for next year,” Barrient said.
