A short paragraph appearing in Leadership magazine in 1986 compared the life of a shark to the majority of Christians. It explained that the mostpopular fish is the shark. If you catch a small shark and confine it, it willstay the size proportionate to the aquarium. According to the article, sharks can be six inches long yet fully matured. But if you turn the sameshark loose in the ocean, it will grow to its normal length of eight feet.
The article stated that also happens to some Christians. They remainlittle six-inch Christians swimming in a little puddle. They only becomegreat when they are put in a larger arena.
The shark story really amazed me! Wow! That’s hard to believe! However, I can easily relate to the comparison to the growth of Christians. MostChristians I know (myself included) swim in that little puddle, being comfortable in our small world – limiting God – forgetting that we all were created for greatness. The enemy of greatness is mediocrity – beingaverage, satisfied with just getting by, doing only the things necessary to survive in a world where the majority of people embrace the enemy – mediocrity.
The secret to greatness is deciding to leave the comforts of the majority and taking a risk – believing that you, yes, just you, can make a difference in this world. Do you need courage? Definitely but with courage, wisdom, that only comes with God.
Do you need supernatural strength to do great things? No. If you’re aChristian, you already have the power. Philippians 4:13: “I can do allthings through Christ which strengthens me.”The story never did tell the difference between the shark and the Christian. Who decides the destiny of each? For the shark, he must dependon man to take him out of the aquarium and put him into the ocean. Forman, he decides for himself if he will use the power to transform his existence from mediocrity to greatness.
