Larayo edges Riverlands for league title

LAPLACE – Larayo and Riverlands held their annual River Parish Swim League meet Tuesday night at Larayo.
And in what is also becoming an annual event, the meet came down to the final events.
Larayo took seven of the first eight divisions in the freestyle relay to rally for a 279-275 victory. The victory also clinched the league title forthe Barracudas.
Larayo went into the freestyle relays trailing the Stingrays, 254-230.
River-lands extended that lead to 31 as the 8 and under boys took the first relay. Larayo then took the 8 and under girls, 9-10 boys and girls and 11-12 boys and girls relays to pull ahead, 265-261.
Victories by the Barracud-as’ 13-14 boys and girls clinched the victory.
Riverlands came back to take the 15-18 boys and girls.
Larayo opened up a 55-53 lead in the freestyle to start the meet. TheBarracudas got first-place finishes from Alisha Guillot, Kayla Klibert, Christy Brady, Daniel Madere and Mallory Brooks in the event. Victories forthe Stingrays came from Neil Schexnayder, Kyle Wilking, Andrew Coleman, Jeffery Billon, Carla Lambert, Chris Dixon and Bethany Cottingham.
Riverlands went ahead, 110-106, with a 57-51 advantage in the backstroke. Keying the surge were victories by Neil Schexnayder, KyleWilking, Emily Gurdian, Ross Brignac, Jeffery Billon, Kristen Abbondante, Robbie Paydo and Carolann Lambert. Larayo got first-place finishes fromAlisha Guillot, Kayla Klibert, Andrew Whitmana and Mallory Brooks.
Larayo pulled back ahead, 163-161, by taking the breaststroke, 57-51. TheBarracudas got wins from Alisha Guillot, Erica Blank, Dane Weber, Christy Brady, Mallory Brooks, Courtney Gist and Dustin Braud. Victories for theStingrays came from Neil Schexnayder, Kyle Wilking, Ross Brignac, David Leblanc and Bethany Cottingham.
The lead continued to seesaw as Riverlands moved on top, 212-202, with a 51-39 win in the butterfly. Stingray wins came courtesy of Andrew Billon,Andrew Coleman, Jeffery Billon, Kristen Abbondante, Chris Dixon and Carolann Lambert. Kayla Klibert, Christy Brady, Daniel Madere and PaigeBraud gave the Barracudas victories.
Riverlands extended its lead to 24 with a 42-28 advantage in the freestyle relays. The Stingrays got a win in the 8 and under boys divisionbefore Larayo came back with first place finishes by its 8 and under girls and 9-10 boys and girls teams. Riverlands took the boys 11-12 whileLarayo took the girls.
The Stingrays then closed with victories by the 13-14 boys and girls and 15-18 boys and girls.
Both teams will compete in the River Parish Swim League Invitational July 10-11 at Belle Terre.
