West St. John toasts athletes at annual sports banquet

EDGARD – West St. John honored the athletes that made the 1998-99sports year a memorable one at its annual sports banquet Monday night.

The school looked back at a year that saw the football team win the Class 2A state championship and the boys’ basketball team advance to the state quarterfinals.

St. John the Baptist Parish School Superintendent Cleveland Farloughspoke at the banquet as did District I school board member Leroy Mitchell and former West St. John principal Leroy Keller.Seniors were recognized as were members of the all-district and all- State teams who were awarded plaques. The accomplishments of eachteam were also listed.

One of the highlights of the evening was the awarding of the Anthony Miller Award, given to the best senior all-around athletes.

This year’s awards went to Jamar Bailey and Crystal Stipe. The Scholar-Athlete award, given to the athlete with the highest grade point average, was awarded to Dehaven Duronslet and Crystal Stipe.

In the individual sports, Hillard Howard received the Ram Award in volleyball. Crystal Stipe was honored with the Most Valuable Attitudeaward by head coach Germaine Roussel.

Quonn Edwards was presented with the Most Valuable Athlete award for cross country.

The football team was recognized for winning the Class 2A state championship. The Rams defeated Riverside, 28-23, in the championshipgame to cap off a 12-3 season.

Donriel Louis was named the squad’s Best Offensive player while Jagen Lewis received the award on defense. The Ram Award went to DehavenDuronslet while Torrian Thomas was presented with the Most Valuable Attitude award.

The boys’ basketball team was recognized for winning the District 9-2A title and advancing to the quarterfinals. Donriel Louis was recognized asthe team’s Best Offensive player while Pendarvis Morris was named its Best Defensive player.

Elijah Jasmin was honored with the Ram Award while Treman Nathan received the Most Valuable Attitude award.

In girls’ basketball, Crystal Stipe was recognized as the team’s top rebounder. Ireon Bethencourt received the Ram Award.Niesha Green was named the Outstanding Field Performer in girls’ track while Crystal Stipe was named the Outstanding Track Performer. Stipewas also presented the Most Valuable Attitude award.

In boys’ track, Dehaven Duronslet was named the Outstanding Field Performer while Rysean Brown was honored with the Outstand-ing Track award. Quonn Edwards was honored with the Most Valuable Attitude award.Niesha Green received the Ram Award in softball. Delisha Borne washonored with the Most Valuable Attitude award while Reshona Saul received the Coach’s Award.

In baseball, Jerome Isom received the Most Valuable Attitude award.

Also receiving a Most Valuable Attitude award was Torrian Thomas who was also presented with the Ram Award.
