GRETNA – The young Riverside golf team continued its domination of the local Class 2A golf scene Wednesday, capturing the Division IV, Region III tournament at Timberlane Country Club.
The Rebels’ squad, which consists of three sophomores, a freshman and a seventh-grade girl, shot a team score of 336 to beat Newman by 14 shots.
Ridgewood was third with a 345 with St. Charles Catholic fourth with a356.
The Rebels, who also include senior Dusty Waguespack and eighth-grader Devon Roussel, have gone undefeated in each of the last two regular seasons and have captured back-to-back district championships. River-side set a team record this year with a 155 in a match and followed that up the following match with a 149.
“They’re so talented, I just get them to the matches and they play,” Riverside coach Elizabeth Torres said. “What impresses me so much istheir unselfishness, the fact they root for each other but in a low key manner. I’m extremely proud of them all the time.”Michael Schoen shot a five-overall par 77 to place second in the tournament and qualify for the state tournament. Schoen shot a 41 on thefront side but came back with a 36 over the back nine.
“He has more talent than 90 percent of the people who play the game and he hits it a long way,” Belle Terre Country Club Head Golf Professional Bob Hasbrouck, who attended the tournament, said of Schoen.
Brett Bergeron shot an 81 to place fourth, shooting a 39 on the front and a 42 on the back.
“Her personifies the word grinder,” Hasbrouck said of Bergeron. “If I wasin a foxhole with people throwing grenades at me, I would want him there because he would pick them up and throw them back. Like Michael, as hecontinues to improve, he becomes a more solid college prospect.”Also qualifying for the Rebels was Stevie Luminais who duplicated Bergeron’s feat of shooting an 81.
“Last year he didn’t play but obviously used that as an incentive to become a player,” Hasbrouck said of Luminais. “He worked his tail off this year. Isee him getting better each time he tees it up.”Also scoring for the Rebels was Leisl Hasbrouck who shot an 81, including a 41 on the back side. Todd Lozano shot a 91 for the Rebels.Corey Madere of St. Charles Catholic qualified for the state tournament, tying for seventh with an 83. Madere shot a 43 on the front and came backwith a 40 over the final nine holes. Brad Pinkstaff added an 89 for theComets while Adam Gros had a 90. Scott Froehlich had a 94 for theComets.
The top three teams qualified for the Class 2A state tournament Tuesday and Wednesday at Bayou Desiard Country Club in Monroe. Riverside placedfifth in the tournament a year ago.
