The Riverlands SPCA (RSPCA), established six years ago in St. John the BaptistParish, has had to find new ways to adopt its animals. Even though the SPCAhas no physical facility at this time, some people are not aware there are plenty of animals for adoption by responsible owners.

After research and consulting with several groups over the country, the group tried a new approach called off-site adoptions.

‘We have to bring the animals to the public where they can be seen,” said RSPCA president Tom Carender.

The first attempt was the local LA/SPCA dog walk March 28. Volunteersregistered and took six dogs to the event. At the end of the day two of the dogsfound new responsible owners. Both new owners have already contacted theSPCA and said they are happy with their new family addition.

The group’s next big adoption attempt was the weekend of April 16-18. ThePetsMart Store in Baton Rouge gave the SPCA the opportunity to take animals there for adoption. Anybody who watches television or reads the newspaper isaware of PetsMart’s pro adoption philosophy. Additionally, in-store signage isprominently placed throughout each store to clarify their message: we don’t sell dogs and cats.

PetsMart Charities’ fund-raising events and public service announcements reflect their mission of ending euthanasia of adoptable companion animals as a means of controlling pet overpopulation.

The local SPCA group is excited to have this opportunity.

The SPCA is also looking for new volunteers, especially for this program, who can help with the adoption days or help transport animals to the site. Anyonewho would like to help with adoption counseling should have an outgoing personality and like to work with the public. Training will be provided.
