Lady Rebels a ’10’ at district meet

RESERVE – Give the Riverside Lady Rebels track team a 10 for its performance at the District 9-2A Meet Wednesday afternoon at Riverside.

The Lady Rebels won their 10th straight district championship, outscoring Ridge-wood, 127-102. St. Charles Catholic edged St. Martin’s, 78-74, forthird, followed by Ecole Classique (63) and West St. John (46).”I was a little worried,” Riverside coach John White said. “A couple ofschools in district have been running well. But the girls came through andwe had a good meet.”The Lady Rebels qualified 14 individuals and three relays for the Region III meet Wednesday at Riverside. St. Charles Catholic had seven individualsand two relays qualify and West St. John had five individuals qualify. Thetop four finishers in each event qualified for regionals.

Riverside’s Amanda Roussel was named the meet’s Outstanding Field performer after winning the high jump with a jump of five feet, two inches. Roussel also placed third in the triple jump (33-7) and fourth inthe long jump (15-7). In the track events, Roussel took the 100-meterhurdles in a time of 17.43 seconds.”It feels good,” Roussel said of qualifying for regionals. “I have beenhaving trouble with my ankle but I try not to let it bother me. Hopefully, Ican improve next meet and go to state. I’m looking forward to it.”West St. John’s Niesha Green captured both the long jump and triple jumptitles. Green jumped 16-4 on her final jump in the long jump to edge St.Charles Catholic’s Cristin Clement (16-1 3/4) and came back to jump 34- 5 1/2 in the triple jump.

It was the second time this year that Green has won both titles at a meet.

She has placed in at least one of the events every meet this year but one.

Green qualified for regionals last year but did not qualify for state but she said the experience will help her this year.

“I think I’ll do better,” Green said. “Last year I was jumping 30 (feet) andmy best jump this year is 35.”Also qualifying in the long jump was Riverside’s Amie Graugnard who placed third with a jump of 15-7 1/4. West St. John’s Kita Harry qualifiedin the triple jump, placing fourth with a jump of 31-11 1/2. Riverside’sRachel Branton placed second to qualify in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-0.

West St. John’s Oneka Lewis qualified in the shot put with a second-placethrow of 31-11 1/2. Riverside’s Heidi Richard also qualified, placingthird with her throw of 30-2 3/4. Ridgewood’s Mindy Livaudais won theevent with a throw of 32-2.

Brandi Falgoust was second in the discus with a throw of 90-7 1/4, followed by teammate Kelly Louque (89-1 1/2) and St. Charles Catholic’sNicole Scontrino (86-6). Jill Tucker of Ecole Classique was first with athrow of 91-8 1/4. Tucker also took the javelin with a throw of 113-7.Riverside’s Nicole Lambert was third with a throw of 98-7, followed by St. Charles Catholic’s Courtney Vicknair’s throw of 96-8.In the track events, Riverside’s 1600-meter relay team of Graugnard, Candace Perret, Jamie Johnson and Michelle Millet took first in 4:31.22.The Lady Rebels also took third in the 800- and 400-meter relays. St.Charles Catholic’s 400-meter relay team of Abby Howard, Melissa Billings, Katie Arcuri and Cristin Clement took first in 52.51. The LadyComets also placed second in the 800 meters.

West St. John’s Crystal Stipe cruised to a victory in the 400 meters witha time of 59.72. Millet was second in 1:05.24. Cristin Clement won the 100for the Lady Comets in 12.75, beating out Arcuri who finished in 12.81.Riverside’s Lori Smith was right behind in third in 12.82. Smith and Arcurialso qualified in the 200, taking third and fourth in times of 27.92 and28.37, respectively.St. Charles Catholic’s Nicole Guarino placed third in both the 800 and the3200, finishing in 2:49.06 and 13:41.32, respectively. And Riverside’sJamie Scurlock qualified in the hurdles, placing third in 19.07.St. Martin’s Sarah Tuuri was the Outstanding Track performer afterwinning both the 1600 and 3200.

The top three finishers at the regional meet qualify for the state meet at LSU May 7.
