The Lady Comets threatened to add to that lead in the bottom of the second as Jenni Traina led off with a walk and advanced to third as Kristen Clement beat out a bunt. But after Clement stole second, Riversidestarter Tanya Teague struck out Lacey Trepagnier and Sarah Weber and got Marci Martin to ground out to short to get out of the jam.
Riverside came back in the third inning as Cassie St. Amant led off byreaching on an error by Traina. “Both pitchers were dominating,” Riverside coach Matt White said.
“They controlled the game. It was a pitcher’s duel at the end. It was agreat high school ball game.” White said because of the way the brackets are set up this year, it is important to finish first in the district. While the first-place team enjoysa first-round bye, the second-place team has to travel to north Louisiana the first two rounds.
St. Charles Catholic coach Teri Hruska said the game came down to theLady Comets failing to get runners in from scoring position. The LadyComets left five runners in scoring position during the game.
“I thought it was a great high school game,” Hruska said. “I was thrilledto be in it.
“They took advantage of opportunities and we didn’t. When we hadopportunities to score, we couldn’t push them across. But I’m very proudof my kids. I know they were very excited to be in this game.”
