This week, an event took place of importance to a number of local young athletes, their parents, coaches and fans. The St. John Warriors all-star11-year-old team, coached by Eric Rogers, won the national championship.

This was a two-fer event, as these teammates last year won the national title for 10-year-olds.

It would have been a shame if parish officials had failed to keep biddy basketball alive through this stress-filled period without a regular, full- time parish recreation director for St. John the Baptist Parish. For feelingthe program is important enough, and for finding the funds to keep it going this season, we do commend them.

However, the time is long overdue to settle the matter of full-time leadership in the parish’s recreation program. The children don’t know orcare if it’s an election year. They need this now. All the political rivalry, endless bickering, egotistical posturing and useless speech-making is doing not one child any good at all.

So settle it.
