School board honors teachers, students

LULING – Three St. Charles Parish teachers were honored for their recentrecognition by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards for attaining National Board Certification.

Only six teachers in the state were honored with this recognition.

St. Charles School Board President Ronald St. Pierre and SuperintendentRodney Lafon were assisted by representatives from Union Carbide Corp. inpresenting these teachers with plaques at the board’s regular meeting Wednesday.

Honored were Hettie Averite from Lakewood Elementary School, Jamie Treuting from Schoeffner Elementary School and Nancy Walker from Lakewood Elementary School.

“These teachers are committed to quality work, and I hope that others will follow in their footsteps,” Lafon said.

The board also recognized individual students and employees for their recent accomplishments. Honorees present received a certificate and hadtheir picture taken with Lafon and St. Pierre.Students selected to participate in Homework Hotline were Kaston Anderson, Michael Ebeling, Thomas Faucheux, Jodie Friedman, Randi Friedman, April Fron, Jonathan Hammett, Ivon Johnson, Tenesha Lay, Drew LeBlanc, Bret Lovetro, Jason Matherne, Hillary Medley, Jessica Pierce, Emily Poche, Ashley Snyder, Brandon Taylor, Melanie Wester, David Braselman, Lorel Gonzales, Barbara Kinsey and Jenny Lind.

Teachers selected to participate in Homework Hotline were David Braselman – Destrehan High, Lorel Gonzales – Hahnville High, Barbara Kinsey – Hahnville High, Jenny Lind – Destrehan High and Melanie Parker – R.J. Vial Elementary.Students selected for District Senior Honor Choir were Jonathan Bevil, John Bruce, Scott Carpenter, Ross Champagne, Richard Clough, Glenn Farig, April Fron, Eric Gordon, Caleb Gregory, Darell Hayes, Jesse Hoggard, Rosarian Hurtel, Craig Matherne, Chris Melhon, Ronnie Ranatza, Dallas Stratton, Austin Turner, D.J. Woolf, Larry Woods and Bryan Young.Students selected for District Junior Honor Choir were Toni Brown, Xavier Dabon, Stephanie Dugas, Amber Folgesong, Kellie Frickey, Scott Lee, Telisha Orgeron and Scott Pierre.

Hahnville High School student Clifford Hymel was selected for the Louisiana All-State Symphonic Band.

Selected for the District VII Honor Band were Kiera Johnson, Derick Wenning and Rebecca Williams, all of Destrehan High.

Paul Lawrence from Hahnville High School was selected for the National Band Association’s National Honor Band and the Louisiana All-State Concert Band. Micheal Madere from Hahnville High was also selected forthe Louisiana All-State Concert Band.

Robert Osborne from Hahnville High was selected for the Louisiana All- State Orchestra.

Ronald Brimmer from Hahnville High was selected as the State Attorney General’s Red Ribbon High School Essay Winner.

Walter DeBram of Cammon Middle School was selected as the Drug-Free Poster Contest Winner for Category Four.

Thomas Faucheux of Hahnville High and Randi Friedman of Destrehan High were selected as reporters for the Cox Cable production, Education Plugged In.

Lindsey Harrison and Quinnel Perrilloux from Cammon Middle School had poems published in A Celebration of the South’s Young Poets.

Jacob Jordon of Destrehan High had a poem published in the 21st Century Poetry Journal, a nationally published journal for high school writers.

Jessica Pierce of Destrehan High was selected for the American All-Star Performance Team and performed with the team in Paris.

Joseph Washington and Gina Webre of Hahnville High were selected for the Louisiana Learn and Serve America State Youth Advisory Council.

Teachers selected for the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers were Susan Benedetto, Danon Dastugue, Chuck Hughes, Barbara Moras, Paula Spear and Stephanie Ward, all of Destrehan High.

Raymond Bynum of Cammon Middle was accepted into the “Institute of Children’s Literature.” Donald Diodene of Destrehan High and Brian J. Mull of R. J. Vial Elementarywere selected as nominees for the 1998 Sallie Mae First Class Teacher Award.

Cally Chauvin of J. B Martin Middle was nominated for the PresidentialAward for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Carol Ann Lukes of Destrehan High was nominated as outstanding teacher of the year to represent the Louisiana Family Consumer Science southeast district at the state convention.

Scott Martin of Destrehan High was selected as the Saints Gameday High School Coach of the Week.

Grant recipients include Joey Brady of Destrehan High – Pittsburgh Conference Grant, Jenny Lind of Destrehan High – LEARN Grant and Aquality in Science and Mathematics Grant, Patricia Meacham of Hurst Middle – Quality in Science and Mathematics Grant, Denise Robichaux of Destrehan High – Pittsburgh Conference Grant and Debra Suffrin of Destrehan High – Pittsburgh Conference Grant.
