St. James board honors athletes

LUTCHER – The St. James Parish School Board commended area sportsteams and outstanding athletes for their accomplishments throughout the Fall at the board’s regular meeting Tuesday.
The 1998 St. James High School football team captured the District 10-3Achampionship, defeated Cecilia in bi-district during the 3A state football playoffs, defeated Belle Chasse in regionals, Breaux Bridge in quarterfinals and advanced to the semifinals against Evangel.
The following players won individual post-season honors: Jeremy Harry received first Team all-district, MVP Defense, first team all-Metro and first team all-State. Chad Jasmin received first team all-district, MVP Offense, first team All-Metro and first team All-State. DougMorvant and Eltonary Oubre received first team all-district, All-Metro and All-State.
Also receiving first team all-district were: Alvin Bartholo-mew, Ron Becnel, Philip Jessie, Edward Jones, John Lucas, Damon Oubre, Chad Smith, Corey Webster and Anson Williams.
Copies of the board’s resolution were sent to head coach Rick Gaille and principal Ridgely Mitchell.
The 1998 Lutcher High School football team was recognized by the board, as they, finished District 10-3A play as runners-up, defeated Redemptorist in bi-district in the 3A state football playoffs, defeated Booker T. Washington in regionals, Washington-Marion in quarterfinals andadvanced to the semifinals against Indepen-dence.
The following players won individual post-season honors: Rick Bleakley received first team all-district, first team All-Metro and first team All-State. Also receiving first team All-District were: KennethJohnson, Jason Troxclair, Damian Ursin, Cleavon Webster and Lane Zimmer.
A copy of the resolution was sent to head coach Tim Detillier and principal Terry Mullen.
The board said the Wildcats and Bulldogs enjoyed an outstanding season, bringing honor to the entire team, student body, faculty, parents, friends and auxiliary organizations connected the high schools.
The board further commended the coaching staff, school faculty and staff, students, booster club and the community for their support throughout the 1998 football season.
The Lutcher High School boys’ swim team was recognized for winning the 1998 Class 3A state swimming championship, marking the third consecutive state title for the boys. The girls’ swim team placed third inthe state.
Lutcher High was represented 17 swimmers. The boys were: JasonBourgeois, Ricky Bourgeois, Jason Chabaud, Shane Duhe, T.J. Millet, DustinMurray, Tyler Murray and Josh Sylvest. The girls were: Morgan Belak,Rachel Hoover, Tia Jackson, Rachelle Madere, Lacey Millet, Becky Sylvest, Kelen Vieira and Aymee Whitney.
The board resolution states that, “Athletic success comes from hard work, dedication and perseverance, with this athletic accomplishment bringing honor and recognition to the individual swimmers, school, and parish.”The Board commended the coaching staff, school administrators, parents and community for outstanding effort and support. A copy of the resolutionwill be sent to coach Joan Murray and principal Terry Mullen.
The board recognized Lutcher High School senior Shane Duhe, who was selected the 1998 Fellowship of Christian Athletes Football Player of the Year at the annual Sugar Bowl breakfast held in New Orleans in January.
Duhe’s selection marks the fourth time a Lutcher High School football player has won this coveted award.
The award is one of the most prestigious honors that can be won by a high school student-athlete with selection based upon accomplishments in academics, athletics, extracurricular activities, community involvement and leadership ability.
The Board commended Duhe, his parents and family for their support and encouragement and acknowledged school administrators and staff for providing Lutcher High students with this opportunity to be recognized.
