Comets’ win streak at two after upset of Jaguars

LAPLACE – The St. Charles Catholic Comets have a current winning streakof two games with a season record of 4-3 after defeating Ridgewood and Pope John Paul II this week.

The Comets are currently tied for first in District 8-III with a 1-0 district record.

The Comets started district play against the Ridgewood Eagles Tuesday night. After falling behind on a goal by Ryan Kerr, Allan Doubleday tied thescore with a goal at the nine-minute mark. The game stayed tied for thenext ten minutes until Ridgewood scored back to back goals by Andre Lugo and Eric Vinterella to make the halftime score 3-1.

A fired-up Comet team scored the next four goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half. Philip Hoffman fired a shot for a goal from his rightforward spot to get it started. Doubleday then continued the scoring rushwith a second half hat trick by scoring the next three goals, ending the game with four goals. Ridgewood scored a late goal to make the finalscore of 5-4. Mihran Naljayan was selected as the top defender for theComets.

The Comets played a non-district game against state power and last year’s state semi-finalist Pope John Paul II (9-1-5) Wednesday night.

Doubleday again started the scoring early for the Comets with a goal at the 1:15 minute mark of the game. Sean Yohe tied the score at 1-1. Jason Brignac put the Comets ahead for good with a penalty kick at the 20 minute mark. Seven minutes later Brignac drilled a goal from the left sideto give the Comets a 3-1 halftime lead.

Pope John Paul II scored a goal in the second half to made the score 3-2. Atough defense by Christian Panq-uerne, Naljayan and Justin Chauvin preserved the win for the Comets.

The Comets travel to E.D. White today to continue district play against thedefending district champs. The varsity game starts at 1 p.m. with a juniorvarsity game following at 3 p.m.
