Destrehan girls climb to eighth at Division I meet

NEW ORLEANS – The Destrehan Lady Cats placed eighth at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association/ State Farm Division I State Swim Meet held Saturday evening at the UNO Lakefront Arena Pool.
The Lady Cats were led by its 200-yard freestyle relay team that placed second with a time of one minute, 45.48 seconds. Archbishop Chapelle won the state title in the event with a time of 1:42.06.Kelly Neal and Carolann Lambert also contributed to the Lady Cats’ placement with third place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle, respectively.
Neal finished with a time of 25.47 seconds. Zachary’s Julie Hughes wonthe event in a time of 24.45 seconds. Lambert touched the wall in her event in 5:22.46. Archbishop Blenk’s SarahMarchand captured the title with a time of 5:07.43.The eighth-place finish improved on a 11th-place finish by Destrehan last year.
Chapelle made it back-to-back Division I girls’ state championships by scoring 298 points. The Lady Chipmunks were led by their 200-yardmedley relay team which set the Division I state record with a time of 1:50.68. Lafayette, whose Diane Tennison set a state record in the 200-yard freestyle, was second with 281 points.
Dominican was third with 224 points, followed by St. Joseph’s (208),Mandeville (144) and Slidell and Barbe (117). Hahnville was 17th, one spothigher than last year, with 34 points.
In the boys’ competition, Destrehan placed 12th with 45 points. Hahnvillemoved from 17th last year to 15th this year with 35 points.
Jesuit captured its 12th straight state title by scoring 490 points.
The Blue Jays were followed by Catholic of Baton Rouge with 208 points and Mandeville with 181. Rummel was fourth with 170 and Fontainebleauwas fifth with 152.
